Providing a high power multiple spark, capacitive discharge ignition amplifier this new ignition, Part Number 6530, uses the same output as the 6AL-2, but rather than rotary dials for rpm adjustments it has a serial port that connects to a PC. Simply load the easy to use Windows based software on your PC, you’re ready to start mapping and programming. This allows you to remove the weights and springs that control the mechanical advance of your distributor and create a timing curve which can be programed down to tenth of a degree increments every 100 rpm. The advantage is precise timing control, with the ability to advance or retard it at exactly the rpm that you want. If you need less advance for easy starting then simply click the mouse and drag the curve it really is that easy. If your regulations require you to retain the mechanical advance in your distributor you can do so and simply use the ignition to modify the original curve to optimise it for your application. For forced induction applications the MSD 6AL-2 Programmable ignition allows a timing curve based on boost so you can map a timing curve based relative to boost pressure and for cars with more power than traction a useful feature is the ability to retard the ignition during the start – allowing you to soften the power to help reduce the tyre damage off the line.
In addition there are three different rpm limits that can be set in 100-rpm increments; one for tyre warming, one for the start and a top end limit for over-rev protection. For applications using nitrous the ignition has an activation wire triggered from the nitrous wiring allowing the timing be retarded instantly when the nitrous is activated.
